Germany, The United States, and the challenges of the 21^st Century: A Roundtable and Networking Series presents

Roundtable on The Challenges of Immigration and Integration in Germany and the US

Join experts from the University of Miami, Florida International University, the German Consulate, and the Miami community to discuss both countries’ recent experiences with immigration and asylum seekers, public attitudes toward immigration, and the challenges of incorporating new immigrants into these societies. How have the experiences of the two countries been similar or different? What can each side learn from the other? How can immigrant integration into work and society succeed?

Speakers include Prof. Dr. David Abraham (University of Miami School of Law), German Consul General Annette Klein, Felix Montanez (Catholic Legal Services), Dr. Claire Oueslati-Porter (UM Women's and Gender Studies Program, Department of Anthropology), Jamie Scotti Everett (Refugee Assistance Alliance, and Dr. Markus Thiel (Florida International University Department of Politics & International Relations).   

The Roundtable will be followed by a Networking Reception featuring German music and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public; all are welcome!

ROUNDTABLE ON CHANGING GENDER AND SEXUALITY NORMS IN GERMANY AND THE US

Join experts from the University of Miami and Florida International University to discuss both countries’ recent experiences with policies regarding reproductive rights,
work/family balance, women in politics, same-sex marriages, stopping gender based violence, and issues of interest to transgender and intersex citizens. How have the
experiences of the two countries been similar or different? What can each side learn from the other?

Speakers include Dr. Merike Blofield (University of Miami Women's and Gender Studies Program / Department of Political Science), Dr. Louise Davidson-Schmich (University of
Miami Political Science) and Dr. Susanne Zwingel (Florida International University Department of Politics & International Relations). Dr. Rebecca Friedman (Florida
International University Department of History) will moderate. The Roundtable will be followed by a Networking Reception featuring German music and refreshments. The event is free and open to the public; all are welcome!

Join experts from Florida International University, the German Consulate, and Miami-Dade County to discuss the challenges both countries face as a result of climate change. How have the responses of the two countries to climate change been similar or different? What can each side learn from the other to best prepare for the environment of tomorrow?

Speakers include Ms. Katherine Hagemann (Miami Dade County’s Resilience Program Manager), Dr. Philip Stoddard (Department of Biological Sciences, Florida International University and South Miami Mayor), Dr. Markus Thiel (Florida International University Department of Politics & International Relations) and German Vice Consul Mr. Axel Zeissig.
